The Story

Hands of Hope is an observational documentary focusing on the parallel journeys of Mura and Hanif, showcasing the harsh effects of entrenched climate and policy issues. Mura and his brother rear Kutch's native Patanwadi sheep, well known for coarse wool. However, limited demand for indigenous wool and competition from imported wool have threatened his livelihood and his flock. As he sells his sheep for meat and milk, he quietly hopes for a resurgence of Patanwadi wool, as he's now the last shepherd rearing the breed in his village, Sanosara. In Tuna, Kutch, Hanif is the custodian of a pottery craft spanning 400 years. Practicing it since he was a boy, Hanif now faces eviction from his clay fields due to the presence of local saltmakers and the Kandla Port. Moreover, intense cyclonic activity has extensively damaged his workshop. Yet, he still fights to reclaim his livelihood. To Mura and Hanif, these crafts form their very identities, and they hold onto them with resilience and hope.
